Ultrasound

Ultrasonography is a noninvasive and procedure that uses sound waves to create images your pet’s internal organs and structures.

This technique is invaluable for assessing the heart, kidneys, liver, gallbladder, and bladder, as well as detecting fluid, cysts, tumors, abscesses, and confirming or monitoring pregnancy.

We often use ultrasound in combination with radiography (x-rays) and other diagnostic tools to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Interpreting ultrasound images requires specialized skill, and our clinicians are trained to provide the most precise evaluations.

During the procedure, the ultrasonographer applies a gel to the surface of your pet’s skin and then uses a transducer (a small handheld device) to methodically scan the area of interest. The gel helps the transducer glide smoothly and enhances the quality of the images.

The transducer emits ultrasonic sound waves into the body, which bounce back as echoes depending on the tissue density and fluid content. These echoes create detailed images of the internal structures, which are displayed on a monitor and recorded for further analysis.

Ultrasound is a safe imaging method that does not use radiation and has no known side effects. It typically doesn’t require sedation or anesthesia for your pet. However, the area being examined usually needs to be shaved to ensure the best possible images.

If you have any questions about our ultrasonography services or what to expect during your pet’s procedure, please feel free to ask. We’re here to provide the information and care you need.
