Microchip Identification

Imagine the heartache if your dog or cat went missing. Microchipping can improve the chances of finding your pet if that situation ever occurs.

Microchipping offers a safe, permanent method of identifying your pet if they ever become lost. This procedure involves inserting a tiny microchip—about the size of a grain of rice—under the loose skin at the back of your pet's neck. If a lost pet without an ID tag is found, a veterinarian or technician can scan for the microchip using a handheld device. The chip emits a low-frequency radio signal containing a unique ID number, which is then used to retrieve your contact information from the chip manufacturer and reunite you with your pet.

Even the most vigilant pet owners can’t guarantee their companion won’t get lost. Unexpected situations like a leash breaking, your pet squeezing through a gap, or an open door left ajar can occur.

We recommend using a microchip in conjunction with a collar and ID tag for comprehensive identification. While ID tags with current contact information are an effective method of identification and help pets return home faster, they can be lost or removed. A microchip, however, is a permanent solution and significantly increases the chances of your pet being identified and returned to you. Pets without microchips that end up in shelters are at greater risk of being adopted out or even euthanized.
